5–6 Day Umbwe Route Itinerary
5–6 Day Umbwe Route Itinerary – Mount Kilimanjaro
The Umbwe Route is the steepest, shortest, and most challenging route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is designed for experienced trekkers seeking a direct and physically demanding ascent. Because of its rapid gain in altitude and limited acclimatization time, it has a lower success rate compared to other routes, but it offers a true wilderness adventure with fewer crowds.
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
Altitude: 1,800m → 2,850m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Your trek begins at Umbwe Gate, entering a dense rainforest with steep and narrow trails. The route is quiet, remote, and very direct. Expect a challenging climb through humid forest terrain with limited flat sections.
Overnight: Umbwe Cave Camp
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
Altitude: 2,850m → 3,960m
