5–6 Day Marangu Route Itinerary
5–6 Day Marangu Route Itinerary – Mount Kilimanjaro
The Marangu Route, famously known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most established and comfortable ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it a preferred choice for trekkers looking for a more structured and less rugged experience. However, it is also considered more direct, with a faster ascent profile compared to other routes.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Altitude: 1,870m → 2,700m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where registration is completed before entering the lush rainforest zone. The trail is rich in vegetation, with towering trees, birds, and occasional monkeys. The hike is steady and scenic, offering a gentle introduction to the mountain environment.
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Altitude: 2,700m → 3,720m
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
You will leave the rainforest behind and enter moorland terrain with open landscapes and striking views of the mountain. This is a longer trekking day with a steady climb as you gain significant altitude. Weather becomes cooler and vegetation becomes sparse.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
Altitude: 3,720m (rest day)

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Altitude: 3,720m → 4,700m
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

Overnight: Kibo Hut
Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Altitude: 4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
