7-Day Northern Circuit Route Itinerary – Mount Kilimanjaro
The Northern Circuit Route is the longest and most scenic route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers exceptional acclimatization, low traffic, and some of the best panoramic views on the mountain. Because of its gradual ascent profile, it has one of the highest summit success rates among all Kilimanjaro routes.
Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Altitude: 2,100m → 2,650m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Your trek begins at Lemosho Gate on the western side of the mountain. You will hike through lush rainforest filled with ancient trees, birds, and monkeys. The trail is gentle and ideal for starting your acclimatization process.
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Altitude: 2,650m → 3,500m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
You continue through rainforest into moorland terrain. The vegetation opens up, revealing wide views of the Shira Plateau and surrounding landscapes. This is a steady and scenic hiking day.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Altitude: 3,500m → 3,850m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
This is a shorter acclimatization day across the vast Shira Plateau. The landscape is open and dramatic, offering excellent views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks.
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Moir Hut
Altitude: 3,850m → 4,630m → 4,200m
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
This is an important acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower before descending slightly to Moir Hut. The terrain becomes more rugged and less vegetated.
Overnight: Moir Hut
Day 5: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
Altitude: 4,200m → 4,020m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
You traverse the remote northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, away from the busier southern routes. This section offers stunning views toward Kenya and the vast plains below.
Overnight: Buffalo Camp
Day 6: Buffalo Camp to School Hut
Altitude: 4,020m → 4,750m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
The trail continues around the northern circuit toward the eastern side of the mountain. You arrive at School Hut, the base camp for your summit attempt. Early rest is essential.
Overnight: School Hut
Day 7: Summit Day – School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Altitude: 4,750m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Your summit attempt begins before midnight. You ascend slowly through extreme altitude conditions toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit and witnessing sunrise above the clouds, you descend to Mweka Camp for rest.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Day 8 (Optional): Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Altitude: 3,100m → 1,640m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
You complete your descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and celebrate your achievement.
