6–7 Day Rongai Route Itinerary – Mount Kilimanjaro
The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenya border. It is known for being quieter, drier, and more remote compared to other routes. The terrain is less crowded, offering a true wilderness experience with gentle slopes and excellent chances of wildlife sightings in the lower sections.
Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Altitude: 1,950m → 2,600m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Your journey begins at Rongai Gate, where you enter a quiet forested area on the northern side of Kilimanjaro. The trail is gentle and peaceful, with chances to see wildlife such as colobus monkeys and birds. The environment is drier than southern routes, making the hike more comfortable.
Overnight: Simba Camp
Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp
Altitude: 2,600m → 3,450m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
You continue through heath and moorland zones with open landscapes and views stretching toward Kenya. The climb is gradual, allowing good acclimatization while enjoying scenic surroundings.
Overnight: Second Cave Camp
Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Altitude: 3,450m → 3,600m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
This is a shorter hiking day focused on acclimatization. The trail becomes more rugged, and vegetation becomes sparse as you move closer to higher altitudes.
Overnight: Kikelewa Camp
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Altitude: 3,600m → 4,330m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
You ascend steeply into a dramatic alpine landscape beneath the towering peaks of Mawenzi. Mawenzi Tarn Camp is one of the most scenic camps on the mountain, located in a remote and beautiful setting.
Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
Altitude: 4,330m → 4,700m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
You cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, entering a vast desert-like plateau. The environment becomes harsh and barren, preparing you for the summit attempt. You arrive at Kibo Hut and rest early.
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Day 6: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Altitude: 4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720m
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Your summit attempt begins around midnight. You climb slowly through steep scree and freezing temperatures toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit and enjoying sunrise above the clouds, you descend back to Horombo Hut for rest.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 7 (Optional): Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Altitude: 3,720m → 1,870m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Final descent through moorland and rainforest leads you to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and complete your Kilimanjaro adventure.
